SESSION
6 LESSON
FREEZE!—
Players will dribble their balls in an area. The coach will call
“Freeze!” and the players must strike a frozen pose like the coach. Freeze with
your foot on a ball and your hands on your head. Freeze while kneeling on the
ground with your forehead on the ball. Designate a player to do a “FREEZE” and
everyone must copy their goofy pose. (Bent at the waist with legs spread and
hands on the ball...Sitting on the ball...Laying on your back with the ball on
your chest....)
SHARKS AND MINNOWS
(Target Game/Dribbling for Penetration) (They do love to be chased!!)
Players stand on a line and face the finish line about 20 yards away. They must
then run across the space without being eaten by the Shark. The coach acts as
the Shark. Do it without the ball the first time. Then
use the
ball.
PASSING WITH PACE—
Can you pass your ball from this line and have it “KISS” the cone. Try
to get the ball to stop right at the cone or gently touch it and stay close.
(Can also use a ball, a bag, coaches feet, etc.) Looking for pace. Place some cones up-side-down and put a
long distance away. Can you hit the cones from a distance? Looking
to improve strength of kicking.
PIRATE—(Dribbling for
possession/shielding)
Players dribble in an area. The coach will pick a “pirate.” “Whoever has
on black sox is a pirate.” The pirate will leave their ball and try to kick
other player’s balls out of the area. Keep changing pirates. “Whoever has on glasses. Whoever is wearing a blue shirt.
Whoever has a first name that begins with M. There may
be 2 or 3 pirates at one time. When your ball is kicked away, retrieve it and
come back. Teach players to shield using their bodies and their arms.
GATES (Maze Game/Dribbling w/ vision)
Set out 7 gates using cones about 2 yards apart. (One more gate than
players.) Ask players to see how many gates they can dribble thru in one
minute. Ask each player for number. Ask them to go faster and see if they can
improve their total by 2. Add conditions. Can only dribble with the right foot,
left foot only, inside of foot, outside... Pick up the cones. Now players are dribbling
in the same area. When the coach says, “CHANGE SPEED” the players should go
from slow to fast. When the coach says, “CHANGE DIRECTION” the players should
change direction. Demonstrate moves to change direction. Have them show moves
to
change
speed/direction.
4 v 4 GAME TO GOALS—
Make the fields about 20-25 yards long.
Coach is BOSS OF THE BALLS. Keep the game moving. Put two balls in play to break up the blob around the ball. Use three balls to have more 1v1s and to allow players who are not as involved to have success. Play 2 halves 5 minutes and declare a winner. Rotate with teams from other fields and play a 2nd game… winners play winners
