Players are divided
into groups of 8-10 players. Each player should have a T shirt,
Shin guards, water
and a Ball
SESSION
2 LESSON
GATES (Maze Game/Dribbling w/ vision)
Set out 7 gates using cones about 2 yards apart. (One more gate than
players.) Ask players to see how many gates they can dribble thru in one
minute. Ask each player for number. Ask them to go faster and see if they can
improve their total by 2. Add conditions. Can only dribble with the right foot,
left foot only, inside of foot, outside... Pick up the cones. Now players are
dribbling in the same area. When the coach says, “CHANGE SPEED” the players
should go from slow to fast. When the coach says, “CHANGE DIRECTION” the
players should change direction. Demonstrate moves to change direction. Have
them show moves to change speed/direction
SHARKS & MINNOWS – (Target Game Dribble for Penetration)
Players stand on line and face the finish line about 20 yards away. They
must then run across the space without being eaten by the shark. The coach will
act as the shark. Do it without the ball first, and then use the ball. Players
must dribble their ball across the space without being eaten. Player’s love to
be chased at this age. If the player has his/her ball kicked away by the shark,
they must join the shark and help catch the minnows. You may play two games of
this if it is going well.
COACH IS THE GOAL – (Target Game/Dribbling & passing
w/vision)
The players will dribble their ball in an area. The coach will move
about and the players score by hitting the coach below the knees with their
ball. This involves passing. The players count the number of goals scored. The
coach can vary the difficulty (or challenge) by moving quickly as players follow
the coach.
BAG, BOTTLE, AND BALL-(Target Game/Speed Dribbling with
vision)
In an area 15 x 15 yards put a water bottle, a ball, a pinnie, and a bag
(backpack or something to represent a bag) in each corner. Player dribble
around in the grid and the coach will call out one item. “BAG” The players must
dribble to the corner with the bag. “Don’t be last to get to the bag. The last
one does a fun penalty. (Put forehead on the ball on the ground, Do a Martian
Pushup). Resume the dribbling quickly and call out bag, bottle, bib, or ball.
If you need a ball, use one of the players’. Now the player without the ball
must steal one from another player. Do not be the player without the ball.
FOLLOW THE COACH- (Maze Game/Dribbling w/vision)
Every player follows the coach dribbling around the field. Along the
way, the coach does goofy things like hopping on one foot, sitting and spinning
on the ball, putting your forehead on the ball, squeezing the ball between your
feet or legs and hop. This will show that coach wants to have fun too.
PASSING WITH PACE—
Can you pass your ball from this line and have it “KISS” the cone. Try
to get the ball to stop right at the cone or gently touch it and stay close.
(Can also use a ball, a bag, coach’s feet, etc.) Looking for pace. Place some
cones up-side-down and put a long distance away. Can you hit the cones from a
distance? Looking to improve strength of kicking.
4v4 and 5V5 GAMES
Put four players in bibs. Have them attack one goal and the other four
attack the other goal. Try to balance
the teams.
Coach is always the boss of the balls. The coach will stay at half line on the side and play balls onto the field when the ball goes out. Keep the game moving. Use your position as the BOTB to help get players involved and to keep the score even. You may put two balls in play to break up the blob around the ball.
